A fatal road traffic crash along the Yangoji–Abuja route has claimed the lives of 12 persons in the early hours of Monday, 9 February 2026, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Sector Command, has confirmed.

The crash occurred at about 3:16 a.m. at Kwaita and involved a lone commercial trailer, a Sinotruk/Howo truck with registration number GZW 591 XA. According to the FRSC, the incident was reported at 3:19 a.m., while rescue operatives arrived at the scene by 3:26 a.m., recording a response time of seven minutes.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was caused by a combination of speed limit violation, loss of control, and possible driver fatigue, given the early morning timing of the incident. The impact resulted in fatal injuries, including severe bruises, cuts and fractures.

The FRSC said 21 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 12 adult males died in the crash. As of the time of filing the report, all 12 bodies had been recovered from the scene.

The injured victims were evacuated by rescue teams and taken to Kwaita Clinic, Rhema Hospital and Gwagwalada for medical treatment. No items were recovered at the scene, while the identities of the driver and other occupants were yet to be ascertained.

The rescue operation was jointly carried out by the FRSC and officers of the Motor Traffic Department (MTD), Kwali Police Division. Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has since commenced.

Reacting to the incident, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Felix Theman, commiserated with the families of the victims and strongly condemned the practice of mixed loading of passengers with goods, particularly in trailers and other heavy-duty vehicles.

He described mixed loading as illegal, reckless and life-threatening, stressing that it significantly increases the severity of crashes and exposes passengers to extreme danger. The sector commander warned that the Corps would intensify nationwide enforcement against the practice, noting that offenders would be arrested, prosecuted and sanctioned in line with existing traffic laws.

He further urged fleet operators to strictly monitor their drivers and ensure full compliance with loading regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Nigerian roads.
