Before the death of Ojukwu, he started the Biafra agitation which led to the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War in 1967 that lasted for three (3) years. Since the death of Ojukwu, quite a number of groups have been clamouring for Biafra republic, notably Movement For The Actualization Of The Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB), Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), The Biafra Nations League (BNL) and others have emerged.

Of all these, IPOB was proscribed by the Federal Government as a terrorist group as a result of the notorious activities of the group and the security network (Eastern Security Network) which was formed by the group.

While others questioned the activities of ESN, IPOB said that the outfit was formed to protect Igbo land and since then, security operatives have been out for the criminal elements among them and this has led to several arrest.

In a recent update, the Nigerian Army revealed on their verified Facebook page that the leader of IPOB/ESN in Enugu, one Godwin Nmamdi has been arrested by Military troops who raided Akpowfu Forest in Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu. According to reports, the troops engaged the IPOB/ESN leader and his men in a gun battle and during the process, his men took to their heels while the leader was arrested. Weapons recovered from them include one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and others.

Two reasons why ESN shouldn’t be addressed as a security outfit:

1. Members Of A Security Outfit Don’t Hide Inside A Forest: We have Amotekun in the Southwest and members of this security outfit don’t hide in the forest, instead they use a patrol van to restore peace and order. The presence of ESN in the forest is a major reason why they shouldn’t be addressed as a security outfit.

2. Members Of A Security Outfit Don’t Engage Security Operatives In A Gun Battle: Members of Amotekun have never engaged security operatives in a gun battle, instead they do work with them to eliminate criminal elements. ESN members engaging security operatives in a gun battle before the eventual arrest of their leader in Enugu is another reason why they shouldn’t be addressed as a security outfit.
