Visiting Central African Republic in what is the first ever encounter with the Super Eagles, humbled the latter 1-0 before the over 5000 spectators at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Lagos in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

The star-studded Super Eagles crumbled and missed several scoring chances in the encounter spectators walked out of the Teslim Balogun stadium hissing and cursing their decision to watch the match live at the stadium.

The last time Nigeria lost a World Cup qualifying match was on 10 October 1981 when the team lost 2-0 at the National Stadium, Lagos to Algeria.

While they had catalogue of missed chances and getting as many 10 corner kicks, the visitors had just one chance and flicked in by Karl Namnganda after a defensive blunder by the Super Eagles.

It is the third time Nigeria lost a competitive match at home after that of Algeria 40 years ago, 3-2 loss to Congo seven years ago in Calabar and another 2-0 loss to South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Uyo in 2017.

They will be heading to Douala Cameroon on Saturday for the return match on Sunday. Like they did against Congo in 2014, when they won 2-0 away.

With the loss to CAR, Nigeria still have a fragile lead of six points followed by Cape Verde and CAR both with four points while Liberia have three points.

The home defeat has further exposed the inadequacy of the Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr.
