The recent demand by the 17 Southern Governors regarding 2023 Presidency has continued to attract reactions from prominent Nigerians especially people from the Northern part of the country.

Recall that the 17 Southern governors had decided that the next president of Nigeria should come from the Southern part of the country.

Eminent leaders, under the aegis of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF, also made the same decision after their meeting recently in Abuja. In a communiqué issued after their meeting, the leaders said that the 2023 presidential slot should be zoned to the Southern part of the country, adding that this will be for the interest of Nigeria.

The communique was jointly signed by leader of Afenifere; Prof George Obiozor, President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; Dr Pogu Bitrus, Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark; Chief Ayo Adebanjo, National President, Middle Belt Forum and Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, National Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF.

Reacting to this, a prominent Northern politician and former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, said that the north still has more four years to rule after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.

He said that for the sake of equity, fairness and justice, the North has another four years after President Buhari so as to equal the years that the South ruled the country.

The former chief whip said that Olusegun Obasanjo from the South West, took over power since the advent of democracy in 1999 even after he lost in his unit, ward, local government and zone, but defeated Olu Falae.

At the expiration of his second term which made it eight years in power, Goodluck Jonathan from the South South, took over power following the death of Umaru Musa Yar’adua and ruled for 6 years. He added that Yar’adua who was from the North ruled for just two years before he died.

According to him, the North would have ruled the country for 10 years by 2023, while the South had ruled for 14 years.

“So if you calculate the number of years the south has taken in the presidency, it is 14 years, 140 days. And after Buhari ends his regime in 2023, the north will have four years to complete their own side to make it even. Let the North finish it and thereafter leave it open. Let us all source for a person from the north who will complete their tenure and save Nigeria from shame and disgrace. By the grace of God, Nigeria will rise again after this dark period”, Senator Rowland Owie was quoted as saying.

He appealed to the elders in the Southern part of the country to allow the North to finish their tenure.
