Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari has declared very clearly that the position of the Chief of Army staff office is not meant to balance the equation as it was been agitated for by some ethnic group, maintaining that the position has to be earned.
Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday, Buhari explained why he appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) ahead of superiors in the Nigeria Army.
You may want to recall that the South East region had agitated that the new Chief of Army Staff must come from their region more so that the next in rank to the former COAS is a South Easterner and to also help in balancing the equation.
But Buhari stressed that Yahaya was chosen because of his experience fighting Boko Haram in the North-east.
“People who have been there for 18 years or even for 10 years, they trained in Zaria or in Abeokuta, they come through the ranks.
“And because they served under all the circumstances, the crises and everything and they gradually rise to that status and you think you just pick somebody just to balance up? These positions have to be earned,” he added.
