Genetics or environmental factors are some of the causes of tumors that appear in different shapes and sizes. Kambou Sie, an Ivorian from Bondoukou who at age 10 was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a type of cancer that causes the fast growth of tumors in humans.
The tumor first appeared on Kambou Sie’s cheek then finally engulfed his face. This made Kambou Sie to be rejected by his mother and stigmatized by his community. It was only Kambou Sie’s father that stood by him.
Kambou Sie also known as Prosper was given a six-month treatment in Italy by trained medical experts. Extensive reconstruction surgery was used to wipe out most of the tumors on Prosper’s face. Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy were also used to attack his cancerous cells.
Prosper speaking on his new face said: “My face has changed. It’s not finished, but it’s changed. I have also changed. I am not like before. Before leaving, I couldn’t see a thing.”
Kambou Sie, a boy once rejected is now an inspiration to many.
