After struggling to beat Seychelles 3-1 in the last qualifying match of the 2019 Africa cup of Nations played at the Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba, the players had a very difficult time leaving the stadium.
In what could be called a show of love, the player’s bus was held hostage for about thirty to forty minutes at the stadium by Asaba football fans who wanted to have a feel of the players.
It then took the intervention of mobile police men on duty to rescue the bus but the players complicated the situation when one of them threw money from the bus into the crowd as a way of reciprocating the love.
The situation then created panic and pandemonium as the fans went scampering for the money on the ground, and the police escorts had to disperse the crowd by releasing teargas to create way for the team bus to go through.
Lots of people like the remaining Journalist on ground, sellers at the stadium and keke riders who passed through the area when it was released were seriously affected by the teargas.
Show of love is acceptable but throwing money at the fans is degratory and should be discouraged. Fans falling on themselves for the money? What do you expect, with so much poverty in the land.
