Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu has weighed in on the ongoing sexual harassment controversy surrounding the Senate, expressing her support for the institution. According to her, the Senate remains a “matured” institution deserving of respect. Her comments come after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabaro of sexual harassment and abuse of power.

Speaking to journalists ahead of International Women’s Day, Remi Tinubu emphasized that the Senate should be a place of integrity and not controversy.

Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio had a heated exchange on February 20 over seat reassignments in the Senate. Following the incident, she alleged that her troubles in the chamber began after rejecting sexual advances from Akpabio.

Addressing the matter, Remi Tinubu urged lawmakers to maintain the dignity of the Senate.

“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I am not taking a position. I believe the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is. We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It is an honour for you to be in that place alone,” she said.

Reflecting on her time as a senator for 12 years, she encouraged women in leadership to stand their ground and not allow themselves to be disrespected.

She said, “I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days. People always compliment you. Women, raise yourself; don’t be in a position where men will talk to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start.”

Remi Tinubu also acknowledged the progress of Nigerian women over the years and praised individuals like peace advocate Zuriel Oduwole for inspiring others.

She urged women, especially young professionals and aspiring leaders, to remain confident and resilient.

“Our youths are well-equipped to excel. Women should continue to lift their heads high and do their best,” she added.
