The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that ten persons lost their lives while eleven others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred late Friday night along the Obajana–Lokoja highway in Kogi State.
The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, urging passengers to remain alert and to report drivers who engage in reckless driving to prevent avoidable tragedies on the nation’s highways.
According to the statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Apamaru, near Obajana.
The crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, which was carrying 21 male passengers at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigations by FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by speed violation and wrongful overtaking by the driver, who lost control of the vehicle during the night journey.
Out of the 21 passengers, 10 died on the spot, while 11 sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts and fractures. The injured victims were taken to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites at Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana.
While expressing grief over the tragic loss of lives, the Corps Marshal decried the persistence of night travel, excessive speeding, and dangerous overtaking as recurring causes of fatal crashes in Nigeria.
He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to intensify enforcement on overloading and to strengthen public education campaigns discouraging night journeys, especially along high-risk corridors.
Mohammed also appealed to passengers to speak up and caution erring drivers, stressing that silence in the face of recklessness could amount to complicity.
“Passengers must take responsibility by reporting reckless driving to the FRSC through its toll-free number 122 or the nearest patrol team,” he said. “Road safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play in preventing needless deaths.”
