The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has reportedly been flown abroad for urgent medical attention following a serious but undisclosed ailment.

According to sources within the Federal Government, Edun’s condition is described as “very serious,” though he is said to be receiving intensive care overseas.

“It’s quite serious. He may recover, but it’s uncertain if he will be able to resume official duties,” a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Sahara Reporters on Sunday.

The source also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has begun discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement for the ailing minister, given the ongoing economic and foreign exchange challenges confronting the nation.

“President Tinubu is urgently considering a replacement,” the source added, suggesting that the minister’s health setback may be linked to exhaustion and stress arising from his demanding workload.

It was further gathered that many top government officials endure long hours, irregular meals, and minimal rest as they manage the pressures of public office.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has confirmed Edun’s indisposition. In a statement issued on Sunday by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, will now lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., which begin on Monday, October 13.

“Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who is indisposed,” the statement said.
