Mobile financial services provider OPay has issued a stern warning to individuals circulating claims that customer accounts were wiped or that the company had shut down, describing the allegations as not only false but damaging—and potentially punishable under the law.
In a strongly worded statement on Friday, the fintech giant said it is prepared to take legal action against those responsible for spreading what it called “fabricated misinformation” capable of causing panic among millions of Nigerian users.
OPay insisted that all customer funds remain secure, intact, and fully accessible, dismissing the social-media rumours as baseless attempts to mislead the public. It emphasized that its operations nationwide are running seamlessly and that its financial health remains sound.
“As a licensed institution regulated by the CBN, with all customer deposits insured by the NDIC, OPay adheres to strict standards on security, transparency, and consumer protection,” the company said.
The firm challenged anyone claiming unauthorized deductions or missing funds to present verifiable evidence, stressing that unfounded allegations will not be overlooked. It warned that those deliberately circulating falsehoods could face legal consequences.
“We will not hesitate to pursue legal redress against individuals or groups spreading misinformation capable of undermining public trust in our services,” the statement read.
OPay urged users to rely only on updates from its verified channels and discouraged the public from acting on panic-driven WhatsApp broadcasts and voice notes that have no factual basis.

The strong stance comes amid a wave of viral messages claiming sudden account losses—claims OPay has now firmly categorized as dangerous and actionable falsehoods.
