The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) celebrated a poignant evening at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner Night, held on Tuesday at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja. The event brought together military personnel, dignitaries, and families in a solemn atmosphere characterized by remembrance, tradition, and camaraderie.
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscored the significance of the occasion. He remarked that the AFCRD represents not just a ceremonial event, but the very essence of Nigeria’s military heritage, providing a platform to honor the bravery and dedication of the Armed Forces while reflecting on the sacrifices made by fallen heroes.
General Musa highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian troops, who continue to combat complex asymmetric threats with exceptional courage and professionalism, often amid difficult circumstances. He attributed the nation’s peace and security to their unwavering vigilance and sacrifice, reassuring military personnel of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving welfare and operational capacity.
In his welcome address, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General OO Oluyede celebrated the Regimental Dinner Night as a cherished military tradition that blends solemnity with fellowship and discipline. He praised the gallantry of Nigerian troops across various theaters of operations and acknowledged the vital contributions of military families to operational effectiveness and morale.
Emphasizing a holistic approach to national security, General Oluyede called for collaboration among the military, other security agencies, and local communities to address terrorism and ensure the country’s peace and democracy.
The evening also included the presentation of medals and awards to senior officers for their exceptional service and leadership, honoring those who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s defense and security.
