The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed recent media reports and public speculation suggesting the presence or deployment of United States troops in Nigeria, describing the claims as misleading.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) clarified that Nigeria maintains a long-standing and structured security partnership with the United States, centered on mutual respect and clearly defined bilateral frameworks.

According to the DHQ, the partnership focuses on capacity building, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support and strategic dialogue aimed at tackling shared security challenges, including terrorism and other transnational threats. It stressed that all engagements are conducted in full respect of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The clarification follows a recent two-day high-level Working Group meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser, which brought together senior US government officials and their Nigerian counterparts. The meeting, the DHQ explained, was part of ongoing engagements that also included earlier discussions in the United States, reflecting a mature and trust-based relationship focused on practical security outcomes.

The Defence Headquarters said deliberations at the meeting included proposals to strengthen cooperation mechanisms, improve coordination and enhance accountability in joint efforts to counter violent threats, while prioritising the protection of civilians and community safety. It added that the proposals are currently under consideration by relevant Nigerian authorities.

Reassuring Nigerians, the DHQ emphasised that all defence partnerships are transparent, guided by national interest, and aligned with constitutional provisions.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity while working with credible partners in ways that strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture without compromising national independence,” the statement said.

The release was signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
