Winner of the maiden edition of the FCT Presidential golf tournament which took place over the weekend at the IBB golf course in Abuja, Inspector Amina Wilfred has explained why it has been absolutely difficult for her to advance to the international level even after winning several women golf opens in Nigeria.

Speaking exclusively with www.theajasanews.com during the tournament, Inspector Amina noted that she believed she has what it takes to do well at the international golf tournaments but laments that lack of sponsors have been the reason she has not been able to go to that extent.

“It has not been easy to break into the international ranks. You know for you to be able to perform at that level you need a good sponsor that can fund my outings for such international tournaments. I can assure you that I have what it takes to perform at such high level and I know that even though I may not come top, at least I would give a good fight. But the problem is that for you to desire to move up to that level you need a good sponsor who can take responsibility of your outings.

She therefore appeals to corporate bodies in Nigeria to come to their aid by sponsoring them to participate at some of the international golf tournaments.

“So I am calling on sponsors in Nigeria to consider sponsoring Lady Golfers in the category 1 to more international tournaments, because without sponsors you cannot go anywhere. The kinds of sponsorships we have in Nigeria are those who are only interested in sponsoring tournaments and not the players themselves,”

Inspector Amina said apart from the FCT Presidential open, she had also won other top women tournaments in Nigeria, “I won the longest drive in the ladies category in this tournament, and I also emerge the overall winner in the ladies category. Even last week I was in Aba for the ladies open and I also emerged the overall champion. By God’s grace I am trying to be the number player golfer in Nigeria but there are other good ladies golfers who are also contending for the number one position,” he concluded.
