ABIDJAN 2019: Nigeria finishes 3rd with 16 gold medals

The Nigeria contingent to the just concluded 14th CAA U-20 Africa Championships in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) finished the tournament in 3rd position behind South Africa and Kenya who finished 1st and 2nd respectively.

After five days of intensive sporting action, Nigeria finished the tournament with 16 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medal.

South Africa which finished first in the championship amassed a total of 32 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals while runners up Kenya who finished with 17 gold 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Favour Ofili emerged the best female Athlete of the tournament. She won gold in both the 400m U20 women’s category  and  the 200m U20 women events.

SARAH OCHIGBO opened the floodgates with a gold in the girls 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03:13s ahead of SENEGAL’S SAPHIETOU BOYE(1:05:97) silver while BURKINA FASO’S DJAMILATOU SANOU won bronze in a time of 1:06:24s.

In the boys category NIGERIA’S NDIPONKE OKURE won silver in the 400m hurdles behind SOUTH AFRICA’S LUCIANO CUSTODIO while EGYPT won bronze though YOUSSEF BAWDY.

Another Nigerian, YUSSUF RASHEED got the silver in the men’s DECATHLON for TEAM NIGERIA while ESE AWUSA won silver in the U18 WOMEN’S CATEGORY in HEPTATHLON and BLESSING OVWIGHONAJEBERE   also winning silver in the U20 WOMEN HEPTATHLON events.
