AFN congress backs Gusua, severe relationship with the Ministry

A new twist has emmerged in the crisis that has engulfed the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) as the congress which met in Awka on Wednesday has thrown their support for Ibrahim Gusua who said to have been suspended by a group of the board members in Abuja on Tuesday.

The congress also declared their autonomy and independence from the federal ministry of youth and sports development.

 
This was parts of AFN resolution at her annual extraordinary congress held yesterday at the Golden Tulip, Agulu Lake in Awka, Anambra State.

The president of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Ibrahim Shehu Gusau who made the announcement, started that the autonomy of the AFN is in conformity with the international best practices adding that the federation will move is headquarters from the MKO Abiola stadium to a new office in Abuja.

“We have declared our autonomy from the sports ministry which in line with international best practices which is inline with the statutes of World Athletics (WA) and the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA)”he said.

“The board of the AFN is to immediate proceeds with the process of registration of the federation with the relevant agencies“.

“ We approved the appointment of Mr Siminialayi Young Pepple as the general secretary for the federation and the appointment if external auditors”
“They also approve the relocation of the federation’s Headquarters from the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja to a befitting office in Abuja”

“ we also approved he sponsorship deal with giant sports apparel manufacturers Puma (2019-2022) as negotiated and executed by the president and Secretary General on behalf of the federation”

He further noted that the sports ministry has consistently interfered in the days to day administration of the federation which have manifested “in making withdrawals from the federation account in contravention of Article 8.8.1 and 8.8.2 of the constitution of the AFN 2019 “

“The recall of the Technical Director from Doha during the world Athletics champions held in August 2019”

The board members also kicked against the removal of  its technical director and duly elected board member, Sunday Adeleye recommended by the sports ministry.

“Consider the series of letter from the sports ministry on the removal of Sunday Adeleye as the elected Athletes Representatives on the board of the federation and the technical director of the federation, and rejected them in their entirety as they contravene the provision of the constitution of the AFN CAA and the WA.”

Gusau also reaffirmed the federation commitment to deliver adequate preparations and podium finish athletes at the Tokyo 202 Olympic.

Meanwhile, board member of the AFN also suspended the vice president of the AFN Olamide Geroge, Brown Ebewele, and four others  for two calendaryears.

Others are Gabriel Okon, Rosa Collins, DIG Sani Mohammmed (rtd) and Fidelis Gadzama were all suspended from the AFN  board over anti-federation activities, gross violations of provisions of the federation’s constitution.
