As the controversy between Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio rages, Akpabio has stirred more controversy by stating that senators who reclaimed their mandates through the courts are part of the Senate’s problems.
Akpabio’s remark came on Tuesday while announcing that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan would face a disciplinary panel over her confrontation in the chamber.
The Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha had engaged in a heated exchange with Akpabio last week after resisting her seat reassignment in the minority section. Addressing the matter, Akpabio attributed such disputes to a lack of understanding of Senate procedures, blaming it on senators who assumed office after winning legal battles.
“I think part of the problem is when people come from court—court-declared senators—they missed the orientation,” Akpabio stated. He then directed the National Assembly management to conduct periodic orientations for such lawmakers, whom he referred to as “midstreamers.”
The Senate President also recalled how Akpoti-Uduaghan had raised her hand to speak on the day she was sworn in, suggesting she had yet to fully grasp Senate rules. “I remember that this particular senator, on the day she was sworn in, raised her hand to speak. I was scared, but I had to recognize her because I was saying we just gave her the rule book,” he added.
In a swift response, Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio. The suit stems from a Facebook post made by one of the Senate President’s senior legislative aides, which she claims damaged her reputation following their confrontation.
