Former Super Eagles star Tijani Babangida has applauded the national team’s decision to invite Israeli-based midfielder Usman Mohammed, describing the move as “a timely and long overdue boost” for Nigeria’s midfield.

Mohammed, who has been in outstanding form for Ironi Tiberias in the Israeli Ligat Ha’al, recently received an official call-up to join the Super Eagles ahead of their upcoming international assignments. His invitation has generated excitement among football observers—and Babangida is one of those thrilled by the development.

Reacting to the news, Babangida said Mohammed’s inclusion is exactly what the national team needs as it works to rebuild its midfield strength and creativity. “This is a perfect decision,” he said. “Usman has been consistent, intelligent on the ball, and very mature in his play. His invitation is well deserved.”

He noted that Mohammed’s ability to dictate tempo, retain possession under pressure, and deliver precise passes makes him a valuable addition to the squad. “The Super Eagles have struggled in midfield for a while,” Babangida explained. “A player like Usman brings balance—he knows how to connect midfield to attack, and that will help our forwards, especially someone like Victor Osimhen.”

Babangida also highlighted Mohammed’s experience with the Super Eagles B team and the U-23 Olympic team, saying it positions him to make an immediate impact. “He is not new to the national setup. He understands what it means to wear the green and white,” he said.

With Mohammed now expected to compete for a starting role, Babangida believes the midfielder can quickly establish himself as a key figure in the team’s evolving structure. “If he brings the same energy and discipline he’s shown in Israel, he will definitely help the team. I also expect him to guide the younger midfielders. This invitation could be the beginning of something big for him and for the Super Eagles.”

He concluded by expressing confidence that Mohammed’s arrival will strengthen Nigeria’s chances in their next round of fixtures. “We need creativity, stability, and calmness—Usman offers all three. This is a very positive step for the team.”
