CDS Barracks Youth Sports end with crowning of New Champions

The second edition of the Chief of Defence Staff Barracks Youths Sports Championship 2019 concluded recently in Abuja with a total of eight teams crowned new champions .  
                           
To emerge winners, the teams clinched the first positions in the male and female categories of the tournament which featured basketball, volleyball, handball and badminton.

In the basketball game, male category, Lungi Gunners  of Lungi Barracks clinched the first position, while Air Worriors Basketball club of  Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base, Abuja came first in the female category.

Lungi Spikers of Lungi Barracks and Jet Spikers came first in the male and female volleyball game respectively.

In the handball game,  Lungi handball club of Lungi Barracks came first in the male category while the female category was won by Jet Spikers handball club of NAF Base, Abuja.

The first position in the male and female category badminton game went to Yonex Badminton Club of Mambilla Barracks and Grass Roots respectively.

Other winners in the basketball game male are the Air Worriors of NAF Base, Abuja and Scorpion Nets of Mambilla Barracks, Abuja as they emerged 2nd and 3rd best teams. The 2nd and 3rd position in the basketball game female went to Scorpion Nets and Full Force of Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.

While in the volleyball game, Defence Spikers of Mogadishu Cantonment and Jet Spikers respectively clinched both 2nd and 3rd positions, as Lungi Spikers and Defence Spikers won the 2nd and 3rd positions in the female category. 

Additionally, in handball, Mogadishu Cantonment Handball Club and NAF Handball Club, Abuja emerged 2nd and 3rd positions in the male category, while Lungi Spikers and Defence Spikers took the 2nd and 3rd positions in the female category.     

Finally, Grass Root and Scorpion Badminton Clubs came 2nd and 3rd best teams in the  female badminton. Also, Scorpion and Yonex female badminton clubs went away with the 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Addressing participants at the closing ceremony of the games, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin, congratulated the winners and commended the participating teams for exhibiting the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the games.

Represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Air Vice Marshal Nurudeen Balogun, the CDS explained that the extra ordinary skills exhibited by the participating youths during the championship will further give them an edge over their peers in other future sporting engagements. He added that with additional effort, the youths will be able to realize their dreams as future leaders.

Gen Olonisakin added that they demonstrated a high sense of discipline, team spirit, mental and physical fitness during the championship. He described the contention for laurels among the participating teams as very encouraging for the development of sports in the country. Gen Olonisakin reaffirmed the commitment of the DHQ towards building the capacity of sports men and women domiciled in military barracks in order to enhance their sporting talents. 

According to the CDS, the reactivation of various sporting facilities within military barracks, as well as sponsoring of players and clubs in national and international sporting events by DHQ, is geared towards positively engaging the barracks youths.

He revealed that the badminton, basketball, volleyball and handball courts used for this year’s championship were among the sporting facilities renovated and remodeled under the current DHQ leadership.

While urging the participants to make maximum use of the experience gained to improve on their performance in future sporting competition, the CDS said the lesson learnt at the championship was paramount for their sporting career. 

Highlight of the ceremony was presentation of trophies, medals, and cash prizes to the winning teams and outstanding players.

Dignitaries at the event were President, Nigeria Volleyball, Engineer Musa Nimron, Departmental Chief and Directors at the DHQ among others.

The CDS Barracks Youth Sports Championship which is aimed at promoting mutual cooperation, brotherhood and sportsmanship, brought together sport men and women from various military barracks within the nation’s capital, Abuja.
