Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has called for unity and cooperation among leaders in the Lake Chad Basin region to address the region’s security challenges and promote development.

Speaking at the 5th meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum in Maiduguri, General Musa emphasized the need for a unified approach to restore lasting peace in the region.

The meeting, which took place on January 29, 2024, was attended by top government officials, including the Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, and governors from Nigeria, Niger Republic, Chad, and Cameroun.

General Musa praised the governors for their support of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Multi-National Joint Task Force. He pledged to do more to address the region’s security challenges and promised that the Armed Forces would work closely with the governors to achieve this goal.

The Nigeria Defence Chief also expressed his desire to see Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) return to their homes and called for a combined kinetic and non-kinetic approach to combat criminal activities in the region.

The Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum is a regional platform aimed at addressing the socio-economic challenges facing the region. The forum’s 5th meeting was initially scheduled to take place in Yobe State, but was later moved to Maiduguri, Borno State ¹.
