Immediate past governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-makura has advocated for the posting of lower police cadre to their state of origin, for effective implementation of the community policing strategy.
Senator Al-makura made the call in a goodwill message at the North-Central security summit which held in Lafia.
The lawmaker specifically called for the retention of the police rank and file, up to the rank of the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), in their states of origin, stressing that the arrangement will afford the police officers opportunity to acquire rudimentary understanding of policing the environment they know very well.
He equally called on Governors in the geopolitical zone to deploy members of the various quasi security outfits operating in the various states, to actively participate in community policing.
Speaking from experience, Senator Al-makura recalled how his former administration was able to channel youth restiveness to positive use through the establishment of the Nasarawa State Youth Empowerment Scheme (NAYES), thereby adding value to the society.
“As it is today, our NAYES are into security surveillance, sanitary inspection, traffic administration and environment security.
“I believe, we will be killing two birds with one stone, if we deploy some of these youths to participate actively in community policing,” the lawmaker advised.
While commending IGP Mohammed Adamu for initiating the security summit, as well as Governors in the region for partnering with the police in ensuring the implementation of community policing in the zone, Senator Al-makura also called for a holistic and all-embracing approach to community policing.
“I feel it should be holistic and all embracing. And we can start from district level, to village level, to local government level and to the state.
“Why I’m saying this, is because we have experienced the benefits of community policing conflict resolution mechanism during our period when we had a lot of crisis.
“And we found out that these committees at various levels take up the heat for the security operatives when the matters are not serious. By the time its gets too serious, the operatives would be informed,” he explained.
