In a significant blow to illicit trade, the Customs Western Marine Command has handed over a massive seizure of cannabis and codeine to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The handover ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, saw the Command handing over 4,973 loaves of cannabis sativa, two suspects, and 195 bottles of 300ml codeine to NDLEA and NAFDAC for further investigation and prosecution.

The seizures were made across the South-Western waterways, with the Command intercepting two suspects with 29 loaves of cannabis sativa concealed in a sack of rebagged rice in the Badagry axis on Monday, February 24, 2025.

Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, who handed over the seizures, attributed the success to strong inter-agency collaboration, emphasizing that no single agency can win the fight against illicit trade alone.

The Command’s commitment to securing the waterways and stopping illicit trade is clear, with Bamisaiye extending appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs and the management team for providing the necessary equipment, welfare, and working conditions.

The handover is a significant milestone in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trade, with the Command sending a clear message to smugglers: they are vigilant, resolute, and will not relent.
