The Defence Headquarters has announced significant achievements in its ongoing fight against terrorism and violent extremism across Nigeria.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, provided a comprehensive overview of the Armed Forces’ operations during the third quarter of 2024.
According to General Buba, troops of the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, neutralized 1,937 terrorists, arrested 2,782 suspects, and rescued 1,854 hostages from kidnappers. Among the high-profile terrorist commanders eliminated during the operations were Munzir Arika, Sani Dilla (Dan Hausawan Jubillaram), Ameer Modu, and Ibn Kasir.
The operations also led to the recovery of 1,304 weapons and over 43,347 rounds of ammunition.
In addition to neutralizing terror networks, the troops dismantled illegal oil operations, denying oil thieves an estimated ₦13 billion.
General Buba highlighted that the military is receiving increased support from state governments, which has enhanced the coordination of operations, resulting in significant blows to the leadership of various terrorist groups.
He emphasized the military’s efforts in the South-East, under Operation UDO KA, where 180 combatants were neutralized, and 354 members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN were apprehended.
High-profile individuals, including Mr. Onwuha Onyebuchi, have been detained and are currently aiding investigations.
“The synchronized efforts of air and ground forces have significantly degraded the terrorist network and its military capabilities,” General Buba stated.
He further reiterated the military’s resolve to intensify its offensive against insurgents until all terrorist infrastructures are completely dismantled.
The General assured that the armed forces remain committed to destroying both the terrorist’s will to fight and their leadership structures, with continued focus on eliminating threats to national security.
As the nation moves forward, this intensified military campaign signals renewed hope in the fight against terrorism, showcasing the unity and strength of the Nigerian Armed Forces under the current administration’s agenda for a more secure and peaceful Nigeria.
