As Nigeria observes 2025 edition of the democracy day on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed has admonished the people to be conscious of their safety by showing moderation and care for others while using the roads. The Corps Marshal gave the admonition in his statement on the public holiday which he said, was another period with increased human and vehicular road traffic, noting that if not properly coordinated, the chaos could lead to avoidable road mishaps.

Speaking on the celebration, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said that past records of the FRSC have shown that public holidays such as democracy day have always attracted heightened use of the road by motorists who visited friends, families and loved loved ones through movement from one place to another with the possibility of undermining traffic rules and regulations, thereby causing road carnage. He therefore, appealed to people to guide against such flagrant display of uncaring attitudes which undermine safety regulations, stressing the need to operate with the consciousness that roads are shared by many other users, all of who must be orderly and considerate to create atmosphere of stability.

“We are aware that the Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025 as work free day to enable all Nigerians observe the democracy day in peace, reflection and celebration. That jubilant atmosphere must not be allowed to be undermined by those that drive recklessly and cause hazards to others,” the Corps Marshal warns.

“As you observe the day, we enjoin everyone to show sincere commitment to safety regulations by driving with care, obey the traffic rules and regulations and especially, avoid driving against traffic and operating under the influence of alcohol and drugs to avert dangers to oneself and other road users,” he further stressed.

While congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of 26 years of unbroken democratic experience in the country, which the June 12 democracy day holiday represents, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed urges the people to embrace safety at all times and gave assurances of commitment to creating safer road environment by the FRSC during and after the public holiday. He wishes all Nigerians a happy and safer democracy day celebration saying, it’s only the living that can celebrate.
