DEPOWA empowers wives of military personnel,others on financial management skills

The Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), has successfully concluded training for wives of military, police and paramilitary personnel on budgeting and financial management skills.

The women who are members of DEPOWA underwent the financial management skills at a 2-day capacity training workshop organized by DEPOWA in partnership with Maxima Systems and Services Limited from 27 – 28 August 2019 in Abuja. The theme of the workshop, “Personal Finance Management” was aimed at equipping the participants with the technical skills required for financial planning and budgeting for effective and prudent management of thei income base.

The DEPOWA President, Dr Omobolanle Olonisakin told the participants at the workshop that it is imperative for wives of security personnel to be able to reconcile both their income and expenditure to enable them establish strong and reliable financial base in support of their spouses who are more concerned with their constitutional responsibilities of ensuring national security.

The DEPOWA President, urged wives of military, police and paramilitary personnel to be financially prudent with their incomes, expenditures and resources while managing their homes. Mrs Olonisakin who identified budgeting as one of the key drivers of effective financial management, urged the participants to ensure that they have a budget in place so as to channel their monthly income and expenditure wisely.

This, she said, will enable them live within their means and save for the future. Mrs Omobolanle congratulated the participants for their active involvement and participation throughout the duration of the capacity building workshop and urged them to put into practice the knowledge acquired from the training with a view to enhance their budgetary and financial management.

She also expressed appreciation to the management of Maxima Systems and Services Limited for partnering with DEPOWA in the impartation of the right financial management skills to the participants.

Speaking at the workshop, the Chief Executive Officer of Maxima Systems and Services Limited, Mrs Adebisi Kuforiji explained that the workshop was aimed at ensuring that the participants do what is right, imbibe integrity, trust worthiness and be judicious with their financial engagements. She identified women as the bedrock of the home adding that DEPOWA members are now better equipped to handle financial planning and management.

She noted further that the participants were empowered with the requisite knowledge in personal financial management, including banking and credit facilities, investment opportunities, payment of taxes, benefits of life and property insurance, cyber space maagement and protection. These she pointed out are in addition to managing their homes and supporting their husbands in ensuring that they save towards retirement.
