The Director of Grassroots Sports in the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Dr. Ademola Aare has dismissed claims of dwindling representation of Nigeria in world championships.
Speaking as a Guest on the FCT Football Update PERSONALITY INTERVIEW segment, Dr Aare noted that the world championships like the Commonwealth games, the Olympics games are meant for the best of the athletes and Nigeria as a country have been showcasing same.
According to him, the performance being experienced in the last few competitions are as a result of the inadequate performance which must be improved upon.
His words “One thing we need to know at this level is that when you go for international programs, especially the Commonwealth games and the Olympic games, these championships are meant for the best of athletes all over the world. We go with quality athletes and Nigeria Is not really short of these athletes.
“Maybe probably, the federations might need to do more in ensuring they put in quality training programs to ensure that these athletes are always in top shape because we have the athletes.”
Dr. Aare, therefore, advised that the country return to the drawing board to get back to its best.
“Nigeria is very ripe to be there, we have been there before and we can be there again so we need to go back to the drawing board like we always say and the drawing board is adequate preparations, ensuring the welfare of the athletes, provide all that might be needed.
