Eguavoen identifies greatest mistake made by Rohr as Eagles’ Coach

As the debate on whether the current Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Genort Rohr should be retained or sacked rages, former skipper of the Nigeria senior team, Austin Eguaveon has identified the greatest mistake made by the German-French tactician in the discharge of his duties.

In a no hold back chart with www.theajasanews.com[1], Eguaveon noted that the failure of Rohr to integrate players playing in the Nigeria League to the Super Eagle mainstream team is big concern to every well meaning Nigeria football stakeholder.

Egavoen totally disagrees with Rohr on the notion that there are no good local based players qualified to play regularly in the current Super Eagles team, arguing that his failure to reside in Nigeria contributed to his failure to identify the good players.

Eguavoen stated unequivocally that should the NFF decide to retain him which he stressed he has no problem with, the issue of where he resides must be trashed out, “I think Genorth Rohr has done well in the job and I think he should be hired but there must be condition. If you have a company you should be able to lay down your rules and regulations. When we were playing, Clemence Westahof, you know his house, you know his address? Close to Airways ground. An apartment or a duplex was rented for him there, so he was here most of the time. The only thing I don’t agree with Rohr is him leaving abroad. But if he wants to be doing that he should be given a short term contract, and short term contract will not help us. He needs a long term contract to continue with the good job he has done so far, and most importantly he needs to have an address here and he needs to leave here.

“I played in this league, Ike Shorumu kept in this league, late Keshi played in this league, Ikpeba played in this league, Garba Lawal, Taribo West, Em,eka Ezeogu, Uche Okechukwu, name tham, Siasia, Amokachi. We all played in this league before jetting out.

“Like I said before, I am an authority and I can say whatever I feel. We are trying to like buy the Nations cup if possible by this administration to win something before they leave office because they have their tenure and it will expire in few years time. I am not saying we cannot get players outside the shores of Nigeria, yes we can, but throwing our back on our players here is completely very wrong. When you go back to your hotel or to your house, go and look at the 94 squad, from the first person to the last person that played in that tournament all played in this league, except Efan Ekoku who did not do so badly.

“So if you don’t know what is happening here how can you be part of it? I am not saying that we cannot continue with those people but let us have two camps like Westahof did those days. Yes, we can still rely on the Iwobis and the others, good players no doubt but let’s have another standing team here so that we would be encouraged, that is my problem with Rohr. He’s done well so far but let him stay here. If he is not comfortable staying in an apartment or a flat, Abuja is safe enough, then we have big hotels. Maybe NFF can plead with them and that can be their contribution and NFF can keep him there for two years,” he concluded.
