……SET TO LEAD NIGERIA’S NEW SPORTS ECONOMY
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Nigeria Esports Federation, Damilola Pedro, has declared that esports is poised to drive Nigeria’s sports economy. Pedro made this assertion during the historic debut of esports at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, in Ogun State.
Pedro emphasized that esports is not just another game, but a bold statement that represents the voice of an entire generation. He cited the industry’s significant worth, over $180 billion, surpassing the film and music industries combined. With over 3.3 billion gamers globally, Africa is projected to house the fastest-growing gaming population, with Nigeria at the forefront.
The COO highlighted esports’ potential to employ, educate, and empower Nigeria’s youth, particularly in a time of rising unemployment. He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for their visionary leadership in adopting esports at the national level.
Pedro urged stakeholders and media partners to join the esports train, emphasizing that this is not a hobby but a revolution. He also called on the media to help shape the narrative and understanding of esports’ importance.
The President of the Nigeria Esports Federation, Yahaya Maikori, expressed pride in the historic feat, believing it marks the beginning of bigger achievements for the country’s sports.
