In a bid to live up to its mandate to bring sports to the grassroots in the nation’s capital and develop active youth participation in Golf, the FCT Golf Association is set to commission new Golf Course at the Government Secondary School (GSS) Gwagwalada, Abuja.

The golf course in GSS when fully completed will have nine green holes for the students, and resident in the satellite towns around the Gwagwalada, Area Council.

While inspecting the ongoing golf course under construction at the school, chairman FCT Golf Association Eng. Oladipo Olaide Mohammed said that his board desire to make Golf a household name is releasable with the plan to introduce the game as part of the secondary school curriculum in FCT as directed by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Chinyeaka Oha.

“We plan to take golf to all the Area Councils in the FCT through the secondary schools, the main agenda of this board is to take this game to the grassroots, as we have started in GSS Gwagwalada.”

He also pointed out that setting up clean golf holes in the course in the secondary schools are very easy to achieve with the land mask and perimeters in our schools with a bid to create short throws “golf is one of the cheapest games to develop in secondary schools. You can create clean holes just 3 and play short games”.

The FCT Golf boss who was in the company of Second Vice Chairman, Mr Clinton Agbor, and other members, Mr Akabom Enebong, Mr Mike Ekoja, Mr Ben Tanko, Barr. S I Ameh and the Principal of the school, Dr Muhammed Sani Ladan, all pledged to support the laudable project by sponsoring the construction of the nine holes.

Mohammed also calls on the individuals, corporate and private organization, as well as government agencies to throw their weight behind the association as they seek to introduce the game to the secondary school across the six area council of Abuja.

However, it will be noted that the students and staff of the school showed tremendous interest to learning the game of golf as the FCT golf association members took turns to teach and demonstrate the modus and terminologies of the sport.

The establishment of the golf course in GSS Gwagwalada is part of activities making the school 23rd Inter-house Sports competition which was Wupa House emerge overall winners as Abuja and Lower Usman house came second and third respectively.
