FCT Minister commends FCT STUDENTS for performance at Technology and Innovation EXPO

…REITERATES COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

TheHonorable. Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has commended the studentsof Government Science Secondary School, Area Garki, and Government SecondarySchool, Gwagwalada for their scientific inventions and innovations presented atthe just concluded 2022 Technology and Innovation EXPO organized by the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and innovation in Abuja.

Bothschools won laurels for their presentations at the National Junior Engineers,Technicians and Scientists (JETS) category at the EXPO. While GovernmentScience Technical College Area 3, Garki came second for its project which wasthe production of re-useable sanitary pads from banana trunks, Government SecondarySchool Gwagwalada came third for its automated water sprinkler system project.

Whilemeeting and congratulating the students for their performance at the EXPO,Malam Bello reiterated the commitment of the FCT Administration to thedevelopment of science and technology education in the FCT.

Also in a goodwill message to the EXPO, he said the realization of the crucial role ofScience and Technology in the overall development of countries has further encouraged the FCT Administrationto continue to support programmes like the Science and Innovation EXPO

Speaking after the presentation of theprizes to the students, the Director, Department of Science and Technology ofthe Education Secretariat, Mr Kola Olobashola, said that FCT schools had alwaysbeenn Innovative and even clinched 3 topprizes at the 2021 edition of the EXPO.

He attributed the success of FCT Schoolsin Science and Technology innovation to the support of the FCT Minister andAdministration as well as adequate preparations of the students and schools. In his words “we makesure each of our schools has a particular innovation peculiar to it and itscommunity and when programmes such this come up, we showcase the best of whatour schools have to offer.

We also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts ofthe FCT Minister and the Administration for their support in helping usinculcate a culture of science, technology and innovation in the life and heartof our students”

He alsosaid the FCT has a well-organized school system with committed and qualifiedteachers and a very effective Quality Assurance Department that ensures thatthe school curriculum is implemented to the letter.

The FCTschool system, he continued, does not tolerate any gaps in its teaching process.“He said we do not entertain gaps and when there are challenges, the systemrises up and fills them. For instance, the FCT Education Secretariat’sE-learning platform was effectively deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Also speaking,the Secretary for Education, Malam Dahir El-Katuzu, stated that the FCT hadexpected to clinch all three top prizes as it had done previously but promisedthat changes will be implemented to ensure that the FCT retains the top positions.

He alsocalled on parents to encourage their children and wards to take on science andtechnology subjects in schools, noting that science and technology wereimperative to living in the world today.

MalamEl-Katuzu also said that efforts were being made to further encourage studentsto overcome the phobia for mathematics which he said is the bedrock of scienceand technology education.
