The South African Football Association (SAFA) has been hit with disciplinary sanctions by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during their 2026 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifier against Lesotho on March 21, 2025.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that South Africa breached article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and article 14 of the competition regulations, ordering the match to be forfeited 3-0 in favour of Lesotho.
SAFA was also fined CHF 10,000, while Mokoena received a formal warning. The decision was communicated on Monday, with SAFA having ten days to request a detailed ruling. The ruling remains open to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
