Fight against insurgents, others: DHQ outlines success recorded by Nigerian troops the last three weeks

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Benard Onyeuko has applauded the efforts of the Nigerian troops in their bid to rid the country of Bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and any other form of criminalities.

Maj. Gen. Onyeuko gave this commendations while given updates on the military operations across the country between the period of Jan. 20 to February 10 at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

Speaking specifically, he said troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have intercepted eight trucks laden with vandalised railway track sleepers and other items in the course of operations in Benue.

Onyeuko said that 25 criminals were arrested, while large caches of assorted arms and different calibres of ammunition were recovered.

Under Operation Hadarin Daji, Onyeuko said the troops had sustained aggressive posture against bandits leading to the elimination of scores during the period under review.

He added that the troops recovered additional 40 AK-47 rifles and assorted arms with 340 rounds of different calibres of ammunition as well as 45 motorcycles and 90 rustled livestock across the theatre of operation.

The defence spokesman further said that troops of Operation Safe Haven arrested 50 criminal elements and rescued 13 kidnapped victims in Plateau and parts of Kaduna State.

According to him, troops recovered 33 arms and 150 calibres of ammunition, 450 rustled livestock among other items of security concern in the course of their operations.

In the Niger Delta region, Onyeuko said the troops of Operation Delta Safe, had in the last three weeks discovered and destroyed 45 illegal refining sites.

He added that a total 72 cooking ovens, 127 metal storage tanks, 30 dug out pits, 23 cotonou boats, 47 pumping machines, nine tankers were also destroyed.

According to him, a total of 2.5 million litres of illegally refined automotive gas oil (AGO) and 2.8 million litres of stolen crude oil as well as 20 coolants, nine tankers were recovered.

“Also, 50 galvanised pipes illegally connected to pipelines were excavated, 12 economic saboteurs associated with pipeline vandalism were arrested within the period.

“All the apprehended criminals and recovered items have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action,” he said.
