The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road traffic crash involving a bus conveying members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) from Yola to Gombe, which reportedly claimed the lives of six journalists.
In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, the Corps Marshal described the incident as a devastating loss to the media community and the nation, noting that the death of journalists—whom he referred to as voices of truth and conscience—under such tragic circumstances is painful and unacceptable.
Mohammed extended his heartfelt sympathy to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased journalists, while praying for the peaceful repose of their souls. He also wished those injured in the crash a speedy and full recovery.
He affirmed the FRSC’s solidarity with the NUJ during what he described as a moment of immense grief, assuring that the Corps is closely monitoring developments surrounding the incident. According to him, the FRSC is working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to support emergency response efforts and necessary follow-up actions.
The Corps Marshal used the occasion to renew calls for strict adherence to road safety regulations, emphasizing vehicle roadworthiness, tyre integrity, and responsible speed management. He stressed that many road crashes in Nigeria remain preventable and are often caused by avoidable human and mechanical factors.
Mohammed further urged motorists to cooperate with the FRSC in its mandate to reduce road carnage, noting that the Corps continues to prioritize enforcement, public education, and collaboration with key stakeholders as part of its comprehensive road safety strategy.
The statement was signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on behalf of the FRSC headquarters in Abuja.
