The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dismissed allegations of misconduct by its personnel following a viral video showing an enforcement operation in the Central Business District (CBD) of Abuja, clarifying that its officers acted professionally and in line with standard procedures.

In an official statement issued on April 18, 2026, the Corps said the incident occurred on Thursday, April 16, during a routine traffic enforcement exercise carried out by its RS7.14 CBD Unit Command. According to the statement, a vehicle was lawfully intercepted for traffic violations, including overloading and failure to use seatbelts.

The FRSC explained that the situation escalated when the driver allegedly refused to comply with lawful directives, creating tension and drawing the attention of bystanders. The gathering crowd, it noted, heightened security concerns and raised the risk of public disorder.

Addressing claims circulating online, the Corps firmly denied that any of its personnel assaulted or threatened the driver or occupants of the vehicle. It clarified that an individual seen in the viral footage wielding an iron rod was neither affiliated with the Corps nor connected to the driver, but was a passerby whose actions have been misinterpreted.

The agency emphasized that its officers exercised restraint and professionalism throughout the encounter, choosing to de-escalate the situation in line with global best practices in enforcement and conflict management.

“The decision to disengage was taken in the interest of public safety, particularly given the volatile nature of the crowd at the scene,” the statement noted, adding that such actions should not be seen as a compromise of enforcement standards.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety while upholding discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights. It also urged members of the public to disregard misleading narratives and continue to cooperate with law enforcement officers.

The statement was signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, on behalf of the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
