The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intercepted a suspected child trafficking operation in Nyanya, Abuja, rescuing 17 young boys and girls who were allegedly being transported across states under suspicious circumstances.
The interception occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when an afternoon patrol team from the Nyanya Unit Command stopped a white Sharon vehicle with registration number SHD 253 YU at the Building Materials axis of Nyanya. The vehicle, driven by a 36-year-old man identified as Nanle John, was reportedly travelling from Shendam in Plateau State to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to the FRSC, officers became suspicious after noticing an unusually high number of passengers in the vehicle. Further observation revealed that 17 minors were crammed inside the bus, with two additional children concealed in the boot, raising concerns of a possible human trafficking attempt.
The vehicle was immediately impounded and the Unit Commander notified. Preliminary questioning of the driver reportedly produced unsatisfactory explanations, prompting the Corps to escalate the matter to other security agencies. In line with inter-agency protocols, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Mararaba Division was contacted, and the driver, vehicle, and all the rescued children were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
Following the handover, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohamed, directed that the rescued children be taken into protective custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia. He also ordered a comprehensive investigation aimed at uncovering and dismantling any network linked to the suspected trafficking operation.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, said the interception underscored the Corps’ broader role in safeguarding lives beyond traffic control. He noted that FRSC personnel are trained to be vigilant and responsive to suspicious movements on the nation’s highways.
The Corps Marshal emphasized that while the FRSC does not have the statutory mandate to investigate human trafficking, it remains committed to identifying suspicious activities on the roads and promptly engaging relevant authorities to ensure the protection of lives.
The FRSC commended the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force and reassured the public of its continued dedication to professionalism, vigilance, and inter-agency collaboration in ensuring safety on Nigerian roads.
