The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has kicked off its 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Port Harcourt with a strong warning to motorists to stop distracted driving, which the agency says has become a major cause of crashes across the country.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, speaking at the national town hall meeting on Wednesday, said the theme “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving” reflects the urgent need for discipline on the highways, especially during the festive season.
Mohammed revealed that Nigeria recorded 7,715 crashes and 3,915 deaths between January and September 2025 — an increase from 2024 figures. However, he noted that Rivers State achieved a 35.7% drop in fatalities and 37.5% reduction in injuries, describing the improvement as encouraging.
He said Rivers State was chosen for the campaign flag-off because of its high traffic volume and strategic importance during the season.
The Corps Marshal outlined FRSC’s Ember Months plans, including mass sensitisation in motor parks, faith centres, markets, free vehicle checks, increased patrols, and deployment of Special Marshals. He also urged the public to use the FRSC Mobile App to report reckless drivers.
Mohammed commended the Rivers State Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing road infrastructure projects that support road safety nationwide.
He called on all road users, security agencies, transport unions, and civil society groups to work together to reduce road traffic deaths, saying, “Every journey must be safe. Every life must be valued.”
