The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a nationwide special operation tagged “Operation Zero Exercise” to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities during the end-of-year travel rush.
The Corps Marshal, FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, mni, has ordered the total deployment of personnel, patrol teams and operational assets across the country, declaring zero tolerance for traffic gridlock, mixed loading, distracted driving and road carnage.
The exercise, which commenced on 15 December 2025, will run until 15 January 2026, covering the peak festive travel period. It is designed as a high-impact, intelligence-driven operation featuring round-the-clock patrols, aggressive enforcement of traffic laws, strategic traffic management and rapid emergency response nationwide.
According to the directive, all FRSC formations are to prioritise critical corridors, crash-prone areas, gridlock points and major inter-state routes, while maintaining strong visibility to deter traffic violations.
Mohammed charged Commanding Officers to lead from the front, enforce discipline among operatives and ensure optimal use of patrol vehicles, ambulances, speed-limiting devices and other safety equipment. He warned that negligence, compromise or dereliction of duty would attract severe sanctions.
The Corps Marshal specifically warned against mixed loading, stressing that vehicles conveying passengers alongside goods or animals would be decisively sanctioned. He also declared zero tolerance for distracted driving, including phone use while driving.
In a related move, the FRSC boss appealed to construction and road maintenance companies working on major highways to open up carriageways, clear avoidable bottlenecks and ensure effective traffic control around work zones to ease congestion during the festive season.
Beyond enforcement, Operation Zero places strong emphasis on public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement. FRSC personnel have been directed to intensify safety campaigns at motor parks, markets, religious centres and public gatherings, reminding motorists that speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, overloading and disregard for road signs remain leading causes of fatal crashes.
Mohammed also called for enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, transport unions and community leaders to ensure smooth traffic control and swift response to crashes and obstructions.
He noted that the success of the operation would be measured by reduced crashes, fewer injuries and deaths, improved travel time and increased public confidence in road safety management.
Reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to its statutory mandate, the Corps Marshal urged all road users to take personal responsibility for safety and cooperate with FRSC operatives, stressing that every life matters and every crash is preventable.
The statement was signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, and issued from the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja on 20 December 2025.
