FRSC Warns Motorists Over Hazy Weather, Poor Visibility on Highways

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists across the country to exercise heightened vigilance following hazy weather conditions currently affecting several parts of Nigeria, leading to poor visibility on major highways.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Corps attributed the dust haze to seasonal atmospheric conditions, noting that it poses serious risks to road users, particularly drivers whose vision and reaction time may be impaired. The FRSC warned that reduced visibility significantly increases the likelihood of road traffic crashes if adequate caution is not observed.

Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal, FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, mni, urged motorists to adopt deliberate caution and strictly comply with traffic regulations. He stressed that hazy conditions make speeding even more dangerous, appealing to drivers to slow down, obey prescribed speed limits and drive defensively to avoid preventable crashes.

Mohammed advised motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances and ensure that headlights, tail lights and brake lights are fully functional and properly used, even during daytime when visibility is compromised. He also warned against risky driving behaviours such as wrongful overtaking, over-speeding and distracted driving, while urging drivers to keep windscreens clean and wipers in good working condition to enhance visibility.

The Corps further called on commercial vehicle operators to prioritise passenger safety by avoiding unnecessary speed and adhering strictly to road safety regulations, especially during periods of dust haze.

Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads, the FRSC assured the public that its patrol teams are on high alert to monitor traffic flow, enforce compliance and provide prompt assistance where necessary.

Motorists were encouraged to cooperate with FRSC operatives and report emergencies through the Corps’ toll-free number, 122.

The statement was signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, mni, FISPON, anipr, on January 26, 2026.
