Nigeria senior female team on Saturday defeated their Rwandan counterparts in the first match of the bilateral Cricket friendly series at the National Stadium, Abuja.
The four-day tournament, which is an International Cricket Council (ICC) ranking event, saw Nigeria win the toss and elected to field.
Rwanda batted and scored 65 runs with all wicket out in 17.3 overs in first innings while Nigeria scored 66 runs in 18.1 overs for the loss of six wickets.
Nigeria won by four wickets, as Fate Fyneface exhibited good batting to give the hosts a huge edge over their visitors. After the match, Rwanda coach Joshua Mwanja said the game was quite competitive though the turf wicket was not favourable.
“The match was very competitive and our opponent was good. “The turf wicket was not very favourable because it keeps the ball low; there are patches on the pitch as the ball don’t rise up and it affects the batsmen.
“This is one of our challenges, but it is not an excuse for us. We just have to adapt and since we know this challenge, we can play better,” he said.
On his part, John Harry, coach of the Nigerian side praised his team for the victory. “It is the first match and both teams were nervous, but the girls did well. Winning the first international game on this new ICC standard pitch.
” We look forward to our remaining games and hoping to own the most wins against our opponent,” Harry said.
Both teams have four matches more to play and the team with the most win will be placed higher than the other on the ICC rankings. The friendly ends on Tuesday.
