It will be recalled that on Saturday morning, news about the assassination of Olajide Sowore, the young brother of the owner of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, broke out. According to the report, the Pharmacy student of the Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo was allegedly shot dead by some unknown killer Fulanis along Benin/Ore express road. And after that, they eloped with his vehicle.

Besides the above heinous crimes that were committed by the marauders, they still went ahead to kidnap some persons. And one of them was a Ghana-based Nun named Sister Emmanuella Anyanwu who was fortunate to escape from them.

According to Sister Emmanuella who was said to be a Reverend Sister at Ayanwu of All Blessed of the Holy Spirit Convent in Ghana, she was actually traveling to Imo State, but decided to stop over in Lagos, where she boarded a vehicle to take her to her final destination. But the vehicle later developed a faulty around Okada junction axis at about 7:30 p.m. And it was then that five armed men emerged from the bush, and took hostages of them in addition to collecting their belongings from them.

Upon kidnapping them, the gunmen blindfolded and took them into the bush. While in the bush, they asked her about her marital status; and she lied to them that she is married with two children. However, when she later noticed that they were not paying attention to her, she used the opportunity to undo the blindfold from her eyes, and sneaked out of there.

And on tracing her way out of the Kidnappers’ den, she met someone who directed her to a policeman that took her to the police headquarters in Benin City where she narrated her ordeals.

Since the narrative of Sister Emmanuella hit the media, some persons have criticized her for lying to her hostage takers about her marital status. In other words, they are of the position that, especially being a Reverend Sister, she should have been truthful to the criminals.

On the contrary, some others have lauded her initiative as an art of wisdom which contributed to the marauders diverting their attention away from her.

Now, the question is, “how right or wrong was Sister Emmanuella Ayanwu for telling lies to her abductors that she was married and also has two children?”

Are there no circumstances that can compel one to do the needful just to save oneself, albeit such deed might just be out of the norm on a normal day?
