The Federal Government of Nigeria has emphasized the pivotal role of the scout movement in fostering leadership and life skills that can positively impact communities and the nation as a whole.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, reaffirmed the Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to initiatives that equip young Nigerians with the right training for leadership. “I grew up as a scout myself, and I know firsthand how impactful it was in shaping me. I wish more kids could have that experience,” Akume said. He assured the government’s readiness to collaborate with the scout movement to expand its training programs, empowering youths to contribute meaningfully to society.
Earlier, the Secretary-General of the World Scout Movement, Dr. David Berg, underscored Nigeria’s unique position as the most populous Black nation, with a significant youth population that stands to benefit immensely from the scout movement. “As of the last count, about 2.5 million Nigerian youths are active members of the Scout Movement, with potential for more to join. We need the Federal Government’s collaboration to unlock their full potential by providing support and an enabling environment,” Berg stated.
Frederick Tutu Kamakama, Director of the World Scout Movement for the African Region, commended the SGF for the warm reception accorded to the delegation. He, however, appealed for greater support, including the establishment of a national office in Abuja and enhanced logistical backing. “We are deeply grateful for the hospitality shown to us. However, we urge the Federal Government to consider the need for a national office in Abuja and provide the necessary logistical support to strengthen the movement,” Kamakama concluded.
The Federal Government’s renewed focus on youth empowerment through partnerships with organizations like the scout movement highlights its dedication to fostering future leaders equipped with vital skills for nation-building.
