The newly appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), Hon. Engr. Dr. Magaji Da’u Aliyu, has pledged to reposition the institution as a dynamic, results-driven and globally relevant hub for scientific innovation and national development. Speaking during his assumption of duty in Abuja on Monday, Magaji expressed profound gratitude to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment. He also appreciated the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, the Governing Board, and other stakeholders for their support and trust. A Member of the National Institute (mni) and Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), Magaji said he accepted the responsibility with humility, a strong sense of duty and commitment to service. He paid tribute to his predecessors and past leadership of the Complex, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions in sustaining and advancing the institution. Addressing staff, the two-term member of the House of Representatives emphasized that SHESTCO occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s development architecture. “Science, technology and innovation are no longer optional drivers of progress; they are essential tools for economic diversification, industrial growth, job creation, national security and sustainable development,” he stated. Magaji noted that the Complex’s mandate places it at the heart of research, innovation, capacity building and the translation of scientific knowledge into practical solutions that improve the lives of Nigerians. He urged staff to uphold excellence, integrity, collaboration and forward-thinking in the discharge of their duties. Outlining his vision, the new DG said his administration would focus on five strategic priorities, including strengthening demand-driven and commercializable research in critical sectors such as agriculture, health, energy, environment, manufacturing and digital technology. He also pledged to prioritize human capital development through continuous training and skills enhancement for researchers and young innovators, while promoting merit, professionalism and teamwork. Magaji further stressed the importance of partnerships and collaboration with universities, research institutes, the private sector, international organisations and development partners to leverage resources and accelerate impact. On governance, he assured that transparency, financial discipline and ethical leadership would define his tenure, alongside prudent use of public resources and strict adherence to due process. He also promised improvements in research infrastructure, laboratories and operational systems, including digital transformation to boost institutional efficiency. “Change may not always be easy, but it is necessary. Together, with unity of purpose and collective commitment, we can overcome challenges and elevate this institution to greater heights,” he said, pledging to serve with integrity and courage. In his handover remarks, the outgoing Overseeing Director of SHESTCO, Dr. Abayomi Orishadipe, said achievements recorded during his brief tenure were aimed at advancing science and technology and contributing to Nigeria’s growth. He expressed confidence in Magaji’s capacity to lead the Complex to greater heights. Earlier, the Director of Administration, Mrs. Olayinka Odukogbe, described Magaji’s appointment as the beginning of a new era for the institution, expressing optimism that his leadership would bring innovation and a renewed roadmap for achieving SHESTCO’s mandate. Also speaking, the Head of the Polymer Engineering Unit of the Physics Advanced Research Centre, Engr. Dr. Mrs. Edith Ishidi, expressed satisfaction with the appointment, noting that an effective working system under the new leadership would enhance staff productivity and translate research outcomes into tangible economic benefits. The ceremony marked the formal transition of leadership at SHESTCO, with stakeholders expressing hope for a new phase of growth and impact in Nigeria’s science and technology sector.
