Manchester United has mirrored Chelsea FC’s recent decision by parting ways with their manager, Ruben Amorim, just days after Chelsea sacked head coach Enzo Maresca. The move brings an end to Amorim’s 14-month tenure at Old Trafford.
The club confirmed the decision on Monday after a turbulent period marked by inconsistent form and growing tensions behind the scenes.
The dismissal comes a day after United drew 1-1 with Leeds United, a result that left the team sitting sixth in the Premier League table. According to the club, leadership decided the change was necessary to give United the best chance of achieving the highest possible league finish this season.
In a statement, the club said Amorim has “departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United”, expressing gratitude for his contributions, including leading the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May.
Meanwhile, former United midfielder and Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been named interim head coach and will take charge of the squad for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
Reports indicate that the final straw may have been Amorim’s explosive post-match press conference following the Leeds draw, where he publicly asserted that he came to Manchester United “to be the manager, not just the coach,” challenging the club’s hierarchy and sparking controversy.
