Information reaching the news desk of www.theajasanews.com has it that the Minister of Transports, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Ameachi is angry with the high level of truancy among the staff of the Ministry and may have ordered a massive redeployment of idle staff as a way of instilling discipline in the Ministry.  

On Wednesday, the Minister was said to have carried out an unscheduled inspection of the offices in the Ministry and discovered surprisingly that as at about 3pm most of the offices were deserted and the few workers on seat were idle and either busy playing music on their phones or charting away with their colleagues.

The Minister who was also angered by dirty nature of the offices promised to meet with the Permanent Secretary and leaders of the Civil Service Union over the issues with a view to begin the process of shifting off workers who were not adding value to the administration of the office.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Joint Union Negotiation Council (JUNC), of the ministry, Engr. Kolawolu Femi, who accompanied the minister on the tour, described the minister’s inspection as timely and a welcome development. He also stressed that the act would no doubt, encourage and boost staff morale in the discharge of their official assignments.

“The minister’s visit to the offices will help to encourage staff. That singular act of visiting the offices would avail him the opportunity of seeing things for himself, and proffer solutions where necessary. As you can see, It also afforded him the opportunity to interact with the staff present. So, It is a welcome development and I would like you to do this regularly and unannounced, this way, the very few who may not be serious with their duties will sit up”, he said.

Explaining why most of the staff were not on their duty post, Engr.Kolawolu said, “The reason most of the staff were not in their offices is because there is an ongoing training programme for the staff and most of us are participating in the programme and some other staff are observing their annual leave”.

The Union leader also used the opportunity to appeal to the minister to address the issue of office spaces for staff lamenting that most of the offices were over crowded.
