Popularly known as Mummy GO, Mrs Funmilayo Adebayo has been trending of recent owing to her statement of how she regained her virginity after prayer. While some agree with her, others have a contrary opinion. However, what is medical science’s view on this?
Primarily, what determines virginity is whether one had engaged in intercourse before or not. The anatomy of the female genital is designed such that it has a skin membrane at the entrance to the vagina known as the hymen. This tissue usually ruptures especially during the first time of s€x. Thus, generally speaking, the hymen tells if a woman is a virgin or not. It should however be noted that the hymen is not the final say of who is a virgin or not as it could get ruptured by other means asides s€x.
The question then is, can the hymen naturally regrow after being ruptured? The answer is No. The hymen can’t grow back as it is just a stretched and torn tissue without the ability to regenerate. Thus, it is practically impossible to say one has regained her virginity back once the hymen is gone.
Also, after a long interval, it is possible that s€x may appear like the first one and so, penetration may take a couple of tries, making the sensation intense or even painful. This doesn’t however mean one has regained her virginity or it’s now tighter down there.
Medically, the hymen can only be regained by hymenoplasty, a surgical procedure that involves reconstructing the hymen. There is also vaginoplasty, reconstruction or repair of the vagina- which is however usually limited to correcting defects or removing abscesses in the vagina.
Therefore, while it may have taken longer for mummy GO’s to penetrate according to her, it cannot be medically said she had regained her virginity.
