Instead of playing for the English women’s team, where she has a 100 percent right to play for them, Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre chose Nigeria where she qualified to play for them through the grandparents rule.

Recently called up by the Nigerian Football Federation to represent her nation of origin, Ashleigh Plumptre will be looking forward to making her first appearance for the Super Falcons of Nigeria as she is already in Austria for the six-nation tour.

Going through the youth system of the English national team, the Leicester City defender has also been with the English club since she was a kid and her contributions will be highly needed in the team where she will be working with other world-class players.

Choosing Nigeria over England where she can easily make her way into the first team, Ashleigh’s recent decision to play for her country of origin is a sign of recognition and love for her fatherland.

Recognising her roots, the 23-year-old decision to play for the Super Falcons of Nigeria has also generated reactions by fans and lovers of Nigerian football, who are happy for her decision to play for the Nigerian team despite her full rights to play for the English women’s team.

Having successfully invited the Leicester City defender to the Nigerian team, the Super Falcons of Nigeria with the likes of Desire Oparanozie, Onome Ebi, Rashida Ajibaje and Asisat Oshoala, are in good hands and will continue to dominate African football which they have been doing for years, but these time around they will love to take their domination to the world stage.

Making a total of 30 appearances for the English youth team, Ashleigh’s decision to play for the Super Falcons of Nigeria will also go a long way to inspire other players of African descent in choosing to play for their country of origin.
