Azania Omo-Agege, Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, has expressed concerns over the upcoming visit of World Boxing Federation President, Boris Vandervorst. Omo-Agege alleges that Vandervorst’s visit is aimed at promoting transgender boxing in Nigeria, a move he believes is not in the best interest of Nigerians.
You may want to recall that Boris Vandervorst has been at the forefront of championing Transgender boxing in the world, and even became prominent when he gave the World Boxing platform for the controversial Algerian transgender boxer, Imane Khalif to participate at the Paris Olympics.
Omo-Agege specifically criticized Coach Adura and the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), who are championing this coming, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over national concerns. He specifically singled out NOC President, Habul Gumel, for championing Nigeria’s membership in the World Boxing Federation, allegedly for personal gain.
Furthermore, Omo-Agege wondered how the person of Coach Adura, who led Nigerian boxers to massive failings of doping tests and were banned as a result, should still be allowed in the Nigeria boxing circle.
He particularly wondered what would become of the Nigeria military boxers if the agenda of transgender as been pushed by Coach Adura and the NOC bigwigs is allowed to fester in the country.
“You know that the majority of the boxers that represent Nigeria are from the military circle. And we recall recently that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had pronounced a ban on transgender in the military. So, you want them to disobey Mr President because they want to box for Nigeria? This is why this man should not be welcome in this country.
Omo-Agege called on the Nigerian sporting authority to critically access the issue while also being mindful of Mr President’s disposition towards transgender.
Omo-Agege remains a prominent figure in Nigerian boxing, and his concerns about Vandervorst’s visit have sparked a heated debate in the sports community.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Boxing Federation interim president appreciates the International Boxing Association president, Umar Kremlev for his unrelenting support towards Nigerian boxers. He noted that the president particularly demonstrated his love for Nigeria boxing when he gave out a pair of 500 boxing gloves to Nigerian boxers recently.
Omo-Agege also thanked the president of Africa Boxing Confederation, Eyassu Wossen for his role in developing boxing in Africa.
“IBA and AFBC have demonstrated how committed they are to developing boxing in the world, Africa and particularly Nigeria. I believe they should be supported instead of getting ourselves involved in unnecessary distractions”, Azania concluded.
