The Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Azania Omo-Agege, has dismissed insinuations of manipulation in the handling of the postponed National Sports Federation elections, describing the intervention of the National Sports Commission as a commendable move to avert chaos.

His remarks came in response to criticisms by some stakeholders who accused the National Sports Commission (NSC) leadership, led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, of plotting to impose candidates on federations through the rescheduled polls.

These Stakeholders had raised concerns over the sudden suspension of the zonal elections of the Boxing Federation less than 24 hours to the polls, alongside the annulment of elections in the Gymnastics, Judo, and Shooting Federations. They alleged that relocating the elections to Abuja was part of a deliberate ploy to manipulate the process.

“Some persons are manipulating the DG of the National Sports Commission to influence the outcome of the polls in their favor,” one stakeholder alleged, adding that zonal elections ought to have been conducted in their respective zones.

But Omo-Agege, reacting to the allegations, insisted that the Commission’s decision was both timely and fair.

“So far, there’s nothing wrong with the way things have been handled. I applaud the Commission for taking this initiative to avoid chaos, which could have erupted if the elections had gone ahead as earlier scheduled,” the interim boxing president said.

According to him, the relocation of the elections to Abuja for a harmonized process was “a very good decision” aimed at ensuring transparency and preventing rowdiness.

“This is the fairest leadership ever in boxing history, where elections are left open and people are allowed to contest without interference. Everything is going smoothly, and nobody should be worried,” Omo-Agege added.

He further praised the National Sports Commission for providing a level playing field, stressing that the upcoming elections would be credible and reflect the will of the federations’ stakeholders.

The National Sports Commission has fixed the rescheduled federation elections for Saturday, October 18, in Abuja.
