Nigeria Customs Service Intercepts Over $1.1 Million in Undeclared Foreign Currency

In a significant boost to Nigeria’s efforts to combat financial crimes, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a massive haul of undeclared foreign currency at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The seized currency totals $1,154,900 and SR135,900 (Saudi Riyals), concealed within palm-date fruit packs.

The interception was made during a routine baggage check on an inbound passenger, Hauwa Ibrahim Abdullahi, who arrived on Saudi Airline Flight No. SV401 from Saudi Arabia. Customs officers discovered the undeclared currency during a physical examination of the passenger’s luggage.

The NCS has handed over the suspect and the seized currency to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and prosecution. A court has since convicted the defendant and ordered the forfeiture of the undeclared funds to the Federal Government, in line with the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022.

The NCS has reiterated its commitment to enforcing Nigeria’s financial regulations, emphasizing the need for travelers to declare any cash or negotiable instruments exceeding the approved threshold when entering or leaving the country. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in severe penalties.

Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS remains resolute in its efforts to combat smuggling, illicit financial transactions, and other trans-border crimes. The service will continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to strengthen border security, enhance compliance with financial laws, and safeguard Nigeria’s economy.
