The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled a reinvigorated enforcement strategy for 2025, aimed at bolstering border management, combating smuggling, and facilitating legitimate trade. This move is part of the Service’s efforts to remove trade bottlenecks, strengthen border security, and enhance overall efficiency.

As part of this strategy, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has approved the reduction of customs checkpoints across the country. This reduction aims to streamline operations, ease the movement of goods and persons, and rely more on actionable intelligence and strategic risk management frameworks.

The NCS will also deploy geospatial tools and advanced technologies to ensure the effectiveness of its enforcement strategies. This development underscores the Service’s commitment to leveraging innovative approaches for effective border enforcement and anti-smuggling operations.

In a significant development, the NCS has announced the dissolution of the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT), an inter-agency operation established in 2019 to enforce Nigeria’s partial border closure policy. The JBPT played a crucial role in curbing the influx of dangerous goods and ensuring compliance with trade and security regulations.

The NCS has assured stakeholders and the general public that the new measures will not compromise border security or trade facilitation. Instead, they are expected to strengthen customs operations, improve trade compliance, and enhance national security.

The Comptroller-General of Customs has reaffirmed the NCS’s dedication to securing the nation’s borders, facilitating legitimate trade, and protecting the safety and well-being of Nigerians. He has also called on stakeholders to support the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat economic sabotage and ensure a robust, secure trade environment.
